Bio

Melissa Lara graduated from the University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) in July of 2001 with a Bachelor's Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and a Minor in Mathematics.  In August of 2001, she began her teaching career at Homer J. Morris Middle School. Melissa was at Morris for 4 years before moving to San Antonio and teaching elementary for 2 years. In August of 2007, Melissa returned to Morris Middle School as a mathematics teacher contributing to the campus’ consistent levels of academic excellence in addition to serving as a department head and grade-level chair, along with accepting several additional campus leadership roles.  In August 2011, Melissa received her Masters of Educational Administration followed by completion of her principal certification program in July 2012.  In June of 2013, Melissa became the assistant principal at William B. Travis Middle School where she faithfully served the Travis community for 6 ½ years.  In November of 2019, Melissa accepted a position as the District Professional Learning Strategist. Through this position, Melissa was able to positively impact the professional learning opportunities for individuals at all levels throughout the district. On May 25, 2021, Mrs. Lara began her tenure as the principal of Francisca Alvarez Elementary School. With a steadfast commitment to enhancing the school experience for all stakeholders, she has focused on fostering an environment of growth and excellence for students, staff, and the community.

I am Mrs. Melissa Lara, and it is an honor to serve as your principal at Alvarez Elementary. My mission is to ensure that every student, staff member, and family feels safe, valued, and supported each day they walk through our doors.
