AUSTIN — Deisy Trevino of McAllen ISD’s Seguin and McAuliffe elementary schools has been named among the top five finalists for the prestigious Elementary Educator of the Year award. She was selected from more than 100,000 Texas educators utilizing Summit K12’s educational platforms.
Finalists were selected from 750 school districts and more than 4,000 schools.
The district's selection was based on exceptional performance in TELPAS (an assessment of the English-language proficiency of students who are learning English), platform engagement, and innovative implementation strategies for emergent bilingual students.
Summit K12, a leading provider of online, standards-based supplemental curriculum, announced the 2024 Summies Awards winners and finalists. The awards recognize outstanding work in education, particularly in supporting Emergent Bilingual students across Texas.
“The Summies celebrate educational excellence, particularly in supporting emergent bilingual students,” John Kresky, Founder & CEO of Summit K12, said. “At Summit K12, our goal is to empower every student to reach their summit, and these awards provide a unique opportunity to recognize and acknowledge the hard work of our district partners who are leading the way in accelerating language acquisition for their English language learners.”
The awards ceremony was held on October 19 during the 52nd Annual Texas Association for Bilingual Education (TABE) conference.
This year’s awards program builds upon Summit K12’s established tradition of recognizing educational excellence, which began with their inaugural awards in 2022. The program has evolved to include a more nuanced approach to district categorization. Now, award categories are determined based on emergent bilingual student population rather than total enrollment, ensuring more equitable comparison among districts with similar demographics.
